Optional Character Names

Intorduction: I was looking at the Powersuit City sites, as I am planing to make a character or three, when I notice I really important detail missing...The JAPANESE name of Characters!

Granted there are character names that are Japanese nor does everyone have a Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary. However, I would like to stress this Optional Article should exist for those who would like it. The idea is simple, the north-American entertainment community has countlessly renamed Japanese Anime Character to American ones due to such factors as translation, re-editing, and marketing.

Example: Sailor Moon from Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon, Robotech for Macross/Southern Cross/Mosepeda, G-Force from Gatchaman, and so forth.

I think I know how we both poke and work this real life phenomenon into Power City...

In Powersuit City, a new fashion trend has cropped up, in recent years, to name almost everything with two distinct name. One name would be in proper Japanese and the other would be either a bad translation of the Japanese name to an American name, or an American name that just sounds cool.

Some tips on how to give a Japanese name:

  1. Proper names are written the family/last name first then the first name.
  2. American words can be chosen instead, but they are chosen over the fact that the word sounds more cool than for any practical reason.
  3. Give awful long names like at least 3 words, (but usually 4,) and are most likely a mix of American words and traditional Japanese words.

Some tips on how to give an American name:

  1. Translate the japanese name to English.
  2. Proper names are written first name first then the family/last name. No translation is necessary.
  3. Use American proper names instead; but they must sound cool and usually easy to identify with.
  4. In cases of Japanese names #4, cut the words down to at least half; preferably keeping the American ones.

Some Important Japanese word use:

-chan -- cute
-chiba -- small/young

Optional Character Stats:

Bloodtype
Bloodtype of the character is just as important as other measurements of the character. Why? In several Asian countries (e.g. Japan, China) blood type is a "fortune" indicator, much like star signs (Pisces, Taurus). More faith is put in these types of indicators than you might think...

Breast, Waist, & Hip Sizes
Always important for female characters. The better the figures, the more luck a girl has to attract boys.

Shoe Size Heck I'm on a roll, so why not. It's rare, but they have been written down.

Equilibrium (EQB)
If a character attempts to do something that would normally be impossible for him/her (including, in Serena's case, balancing), he/she must roll against EQB or fall down embarrassingly.

Cry Baby (CBY)
If a character undergoes emotional stress and fails a CBY check, he/she (depending on his/her characterization) either breaks down and cries or flies off the handle (Serena would cry, Lum would fly off the handle.)
