Dreams of Terror and Death

A Review by Christian Conkle

I have recently acquired the Lovecraft collection Dreams of Terror and Death. It is an excellent collection of some of Lovecraft's finest works (and a few of his not-so). The Collection runs the gamut of Lovecraft fiction from his Dunsanian dream-cycle to his best horror stories, previously only available in seperate books.

The book is fairly large (387 pages) with and introduction by Neil Gaiman. The first half of the book is devoted to his shorter and un-finished stories. These, I feel are some of his worst. The second half is devoted to his longer stories. The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath, Pickman's Model, and Escape from Innsmouth. His un-finished stories are interesting to anyone interested in studying Lovecraftian fiction and his creative process, but they are ultimately unfulfilling.

The book is published by Del Rey (ISBN: 0-345-38421-0) and is available at most book store chains. It is the first major publication of previously hard-to-find Lovecraft material in decades, and I encourage it's purchase.

I want to know how you feel about this or any other Lovecraft biographies. Please E-Mail me at: conkle@mecha.com
