Dr. Donalds received his M.D. from NYU where he earned praise for his research on the HIV virus. He then went to work for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. At the CDC Dr. Donalds worked in the Center for Infectious Diseases' Special Pathogen Branch. While in the SPB, Dr. Donalds worked to stop the Hantavirus outbreak in Arizona and has done research on the Ebola Zaire virus in Kinshasa as well as continuing his work on HIV. After 3 years with the Special Pathogen Branch, Dr. Donalds transferred to the Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Maryland as a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service.
