Lovecraft: A look behind the Cthulhu MythosA Review by Christian ConkleThe book itself is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Cthulhu Mythos or in Lovecraft, the man. I read the book in one sitting and it kept me up all night. The book is also a great reference for when you read Lovecraft's stories. I would read a story, then check out the background of the story in the Biography. It provides added depth and insight into even his lesser works. Beyond Lovecraft, the book details the history of the Mythos itself, chronicalling the efforts of August Derleth to keep the Mythos alive and introduces the, at the time, new writers in the Mythos: Ramsey Campbell, Brian Lumley, and others. At the end of the book is a dated bibliography of the Cthulhu Mythos that, at the author's own admission, is selective. I purchased my copy of this book at Powell's City of Books, the largest book store on the West Coast, so it may be hard to find. As I said before, I read it cover to cover in a single night and was fascinated by the life of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Afterwards, I went on to read other Lin Carter books. Under a Green Star was pretty much forgettable but was quite Lovecraftian. I look forward to reading more material from Neo-Lovecrafts.
